Sunrise-tech Podcast #15 – CalicoLeaf

Posted April 8th, 2012 by steph

We are excited to bring you a truly special dj mix from Portland Producer/DJ CalicoLeaf.

Born in Long Beach, California and soaked with a steady intake of fingerstyle guitar, jazz, blues piano, and classical music, Nathanael Wheaton (aka CalicoLeaf) began experimenting with electronic sounds at the age of fifteen. His interest in songwriting and musicianship on every instrument evolved into a love for arranging soundtracks and recording projects of all genre. His influences range from the orchestral drones of the Constellation Records lineup to world chant and seventies progressive rock bands.

As as producer, CalicoLeaf pushes the boundaries of traditional dance music composition, utilizing formal arrangement stylings found more often in vintage video games and orchestra halls than on the club dancefloor. As a deejay, he revels in unconventional juxtopositions of genre: shifting tempos, sharp polyrhythms, and ethereal atmospheres juxtaposed with tribal dance rhythms, minimal tech, chill glitches, house, and dub beats; and sprinkled with classic rock, roots music, and vampy jazz overtones. He currently lives in Portland, Oregon.

This will be Sunrise-tech’s season closing episode, as we take a break to regroup and reorganize. We hope you enjoy the start of a beautiful campout and festival season.

Sunrise-tech Podcast #14 – MACRODOT

Posted March 4th, 2012 by steph

We bring you a new mix from Phoenix favorite producer and DJ, MACRODOT. Make sure to check out his website his for discography and mixes.

MACRODOT consciousness began millions of years ago and many light years away in the area you now call the constellation of Lyra. Eventually this consciousness took bodily form and MACRODOT lived without ego for many lifetimes in this utopian society. But with all light, comes darkness, and eventually his home, his love, and his family were destroyed in the Galactic War. Reincarnating across the span of the universe and searching for the freedom he once had, his journey continued. A haunting stint on the planet Vega followed by the destruction of the utopian planet Maldek greatly amplified the eternal longing that only one form of language can communicate: Music. The MACRODOT consciousness speaks to a yearning for a planet that will once again be remembered. Reawakening… Ego shrinking… Pain subsiding… MACRODOT Music.

Sunrise-tech presents: Guest DJ, Indidjinous.

Years of unwanted childhood music lessons led Michael Morel to develop an aversion to common instruments like guitars and pianos. Intrigued by the unusual sounds of the didjeridu, Morel’s musical interests were truly sparked when he began playing the ancient Australian wind instrument in 1998. Adopting the alias Indidjinous, he often played didjeridu over other DJ’s live sets using various electric guitar pedals to distort the sound. After graduating college in 2002 he began experimenting with production, further incorporating his didjeridu into drum n’ bass/jungle music. Today his performances typically consist of mixing his own tunes with like-minded tracks, though occasionally the didjeridu still makes an appearance.

Citing major influences from Technical Itch, Dom & Roland, Paradox, Teebee, Hive and Amit, Indidjinous tunes are cinematic, tribal and dark. His sound spans several styles of drum n’ bass including techstep, drumfunk, half-time, experimental, atmospheric & neurofunk. Overtly melodic sounds are almost wholly absent in his productions. Instead he tends toward abstract sci-fi atmospherics, industrial sound effects, and dis-harmonic bass lines. He lives in his native San Francisco Bay.

Sunrise-tech Podcast # 009 – Rena Jones

Posted October 9th, 2011 by Admin Joe

Autumn begins, we at Sunrise-tech are very pleased to bring you a beautiful music set from Rena Jones. Recorded live at the 7th Annual Raindance Campout.

“Literally one of the best experimental artists currently making tracks… Layers and layers of experimental-electronic goodness… focus constantly shifts from leads to bridges to the beat and back around again…using sounds in Ableton Live that many others would have difficulty with, but instead forms an analog/virtual opus.” — Women’s Radio

Jones slips through the veils of defined sound, weaving cello, violin, woodwinds, rhodes, electronics and sound design through unique instrumentation.

Her tracks have been released with several reputable international labels as Iboga, Spun Records, Aleph Zero, Ultimae, 1320 Records, Addictech, Native State Records and she’s celebrating the launch of her new labels Cartesian Binary Recordings and Pok Pok records.

Two of Jones’ albums have been chosen in the top 25 essential albums of the year on NPR Echoes Radio in 2006 and in 2009.

Multiple tours around North America and Europe have lead Rena to perform at some of the worlds most established cutting edge electronic music festivals; Glade Festival (UK), The Secret Garden Festival (UK), Shambhala Music Festival (Canada), Lightning in a Bottle as well as tour support for Plaid and opener for Ladytron and Trentemoller.

Jones’ live sets are a potent sonic session. She orchestrates her violin and cello over hand crafted beats melding the organic with the electronic. Her performance is a sophisticated example of the modern movement in electronic dance and ambient music.

“The revered daughter of San Francisco’s electronic music scene” — OEM Radio — Jones has made a mark on the world of downtempo music.

”It may be ambient but unlike much of the downtempo music around it’s certainly not background music.”– Total Music Magazine

Sunrise-tech Podcast #008 – Warbreaker

Posted September 11th, 2011 by steph

With people freshly dusted and back from the playa, campouts and festivals, this summer has been truly memorable. The crew over here at Sunrise-tech is pleased to bring you a bangin’ sunrise mix from bay area junglist/producer Warbreaker (ACTIVE MINDZ, JUNGLETRAIN, IN2IT). Make sure to also check out his recent release on Flatwoods Creative “Dead Man Jungle.”

Bio:

The one like the Warbreaker has been a fan of subversive, experimental music since his early days on the planet Earth. Growing up in Southern California, Warbreaker was introduced to the thriving Los Angeles Drum & Bass scene early on in his high school days, by a close friend. He immediately fell in love with the music and its culture. Going to numerous massives and illegal parties was the weekly routine. While at the same time going to and playing in punk rock and metal bands, he was inspired by the diversity and acceptance of the Los Angeles rave scene along with the jungle beats he heard crumbling musical boundaries.

It wasn’t until age 23 when Warbreaker became serious about djing. After a tremendous amount of inspiration and technical education from friend DJ Silly Kid, he decided it was time to start playing out and contributing to the music . Whenever you hear War//breakeR play, be prepared for over the top, experimental beats. Whether dark, light, ambient, distorted, jazzy, classical, hip hop or electro influence, you will hear experimentations in sound, tear out drum tracks, heavy bass lines, and gripping atmospherics. TUNE INTO Jungle Train every other Wednesday at 8PM (pst) to hear War//breakeR and partner in crime Grace in the mix for their Active Mindz Radio show… Therefore, be on the look out for War//breakeR gigs/mixes with affiliated teams ACTIVE MINDZ, JUNGLETRAIN, & IN2IT!

Sunrise-tech Podcast #006 – Dao

Posted July 3rd, 2011 by steph

With summer now in full swing, Sunrise-tech brings you a tantalizing progressive breaks mix from DJ Dao.

Dao starting spinning as a radio DJ in 1995. Catching the late 90’s wave of electronic music his sound soon evolved to the more mature sounds of techy progressive house. From 99-01, Dao invested years of involvement in the Philly scene producing events with Digital Movement and spinning from NJ, Philly, Baltimore, & DC. A book could be written about those days, but long story short, it became time to move on… move West to an SF scene that still represented the best of EDM culture.

He never stopped spinning, digging through crates, staying up on new releases, amassing a massive arsenal of music spanning almost every genre. What always typified Dao’s music selection was a refined, mature sound; precise technical production, emotive elements, deep mixing, a knack for following the muse.

Mixing is a release to intuitive synesthesia; songs are colors and shapes and have their own agenda how they want to be mixed. Dao prefers to mix deep and long, playing within the tracks’ logic and creating sets that are mostly overlays, truly more than the sum of its parts. Sets are journeys and not all who wander are lost; indeed Dao prefers to skirt genres and allow the set to evolve on its own. A live set is never predetermined, there is an organic give and take in the moment with the crowd that needs to stay supple and responsive. Most studio sets are not predetermined either, however, on this set definite intentions (colors) have been planned. We invite you to take a listen and provide feedback.

Now a key member of the Burning Man and Bay Area electronic dance music scene, you can find him spinning regularly at local clubs, outdoor gatherings, and festivals.
